What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a branch of medicine based on over 2,500 years of Chinese healing traditions. Taoism and its philosophy is a major belief system that underlies TCM. It’s based on the beliefs that everything is interdependent and that the human body contains a set of interconnected systems that maintain healthy function through the balance of yin and yang, or opposing energies, and the natural flow of qi, the body’s vital energy.

When yin and yang are out of balance or there is a blockage of qi flow through the body’s energy pathways (or meridians), one's health can be adversely affected. Daily stress, out-of-balanced lifestyles, poor nutrition, and environmental pollution can also contribute to disease or imbalance in your system.

A Holistic Approach through Food

TCM emphasizes a holistic approach to look at the body as a whole and focuses on prevention and treatment of the underlying causes of illness or internal imbalance. Remedies are designed to restore the balance of the whole body, and foods, especially plant foods, are used as medicine. Even Hippocrates who coined "food is medicine" nearly 2,500 years ago, advocated that good nutrition and what you put into your body is the foundation for good health! By being in tune with nature and our bodies, we cultivate optimal self-healing and vitality.

Common Herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Many herbs frequently found in traditional TCM formulas may likely already have a place in your kitchen (hi ginger!), diet and wellness regimen. In TCM, however, these all-natural ingredients, used alone or in formulas, are specially cultivated and prepared to maximize their benefits to your body’s natural function. Herbal formulas multiply the benefits of the herbs used since taking the herbs in combination often enhances their overall effects and advantages, much the same way, certain foods prepared together offer higher nutritional value.
